Common names:  Fiery Hunter, Ground Beetle

Scientific name: (Family):  Calosoma calidum

Region:  Throughout North America similar species in Europe

This Hunter lives in open, dry fields with low vegetation. This active predator can be found from June until the beginning of August when they begin to settle in to overwinter.

Life cycle:  One generation per year.  Adults may live up to three years.  Adults hibernate in the soil.

Physical Description:  The adults are Black, sometimes with green margined; elytra  deeply striped, with six rows of golden or red spots in deep perforations.

Neither the adults nor larvae climb trees,

Feeding characteristics:  Both the adults and larvae are fierce hunters of Cutworms and Armyworms.
